Latest LPs Collected

Lists are quick and fun to make. Like any obsessed collector, I could spend an hour talking about each one of these releases but to sit down and write about them would take away my time to enjoy listening to them with my son. So here are some interesting bits of information about them:

Silver Jews – Bright Flight
12” LP
Natalie has loved this album for years and it’s always been on her list of albums to have if she ever comes across it. She doesn’t know a lot about the SJ but from the songs she has heard she fell in love with their “country easy” style. Slow long drawls and calm sweet lyrics make this album her SJ favorite.

Retox – Ugly Animals
12” white LP (2nd side etched)
Retox – s/t
7” picture-disc EP
Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian of The Locust. There’s a lot more to say about this amazing new band, but you’d best crank up the volume and listen to them.
The EP pictured after Ugly Animals is actually almost a year old, and was available for free as an online demo album.
One thing I’ve got to add is that every time I’m amazed at the value for money one gets in regards to music and design in Pearson releases.

The Tom Price Desert Classic – She Ran/Helldive to Victory
7” red/white/blue/green/clear single
This is the only release available thus far from TPDC, and this one features 3 original (personal heroes) Gas Huffer members. Since its release Matt Wright has unfortunately left the group but the world still waits for more releases from these true rock n’ rollers.

Mayer Hawthorne – How Do You Do
12” 2LP
This Stones Throw cat is one that is sure to make anyone move. I’ve ranted a bit about this guy being the undistorted Jamie Lidell.

The Dead Weather – Horehound
12” 2LP (4th side etched)
I cut like a buffalo. Beautiful packaging, heavyweight double LP and amazing dark rock n’ roll.

The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers
12” LP (reissue)
Again – Third Man delivers a beautiful package for this instant classic of a record. Heavyweight and fat sound, Jack White did it again.

Sunny Day Real Estate – LP2 (The Pink Album)
12” 2LP (re-issue)
This is the third SDRE album we have on vinyl, and it’s been a long time coming. This one is actually my favorite release by them and my scratched up CD version will vouch for that. Unfortunately, until last year the prices for the original pressing skyrocketed, but we’re happy to have the reissue with 2 bonus tracks.

Foo Fighters – In Your Honor
12” 4LP Box
We ended up buying the beautiful original pressing of this masterpiece. If Wasting Light and seeing Foo Fighters live taught us anything, it was to go back and experience their great songs all over again. And In Your Honor certainly has so many beautiful moments. Along with The Colour and the Shape and Wasting Light, the best Foo Fighters albums are in good hands.

Princess Chelses – Lil’ Golden Book
12” LP
We snagged a copy of the gold LP first edition just in time. The winner of the best Jekyll album of the year doesn’t only have beautiful music throughout the album, but also packaging that is simply adorable. I don’t know why only 300 copies were made. Needless to say, all copies sold out. The only downside to this is that I was kind of hoping the B-side track “Positive Guy Meets Negative Man” would end up as a vinyl-only bonus.

Justin Pearson – How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
2 Books + 2 7” Flexi Singles
Like I previously said, when one gets a Pearson release, he sure gets value for his money. This bundle includes two stories written by Pearson about collaborations with 2 DJ acts in recent years: The Bloody Beetroots and Designer Drugs. Besides the hilarious/tragic point of view told by Justin, two picture 7” flexis are also included (that means playable music!).
I wish every music-related book would be like this.

Russian Circles – Empros
12” LP
This is the 4th release by RC and the third with bass player Brian Cook. Heavy instrumental soundscapes that simply blow your mind.

Joey Cape – Doesn’t Play Well With Others
12” red LP
I’ve talked a lot about this album and Joey Cape in recent months. It’s the prefect album for Saturday mornings.

The Album Leaf – A Chorus of Storytellers
12” 2LP (4th side etched)
We love Jimmy LaValle’s work. It’s amazing that The Album Leaf “guy” was also in the Locust and in the current line-up of Swing Kids/Blue Note. The interview with him was the only one conducted alone by yours truly and remains one of my favorites.
